The chutes du Carbet (Carbet falls) are very iconic to Basse-Terre, the highly forested part of Guadeloupe. These 3 consecutive waterfalls make the rain forest look like you're in the king kong movie. The third chute du Carbet is often visited seperatly from the other two, as a rough path through the rain forest seperates them.
If you are up for the challenge though, you're in for a treat. This hike is epic from start to end, through pristine rain forest you'll see waterfall after waterfall appear in the distance.
Prepare well before starting the hike. Steep muddy hills make this hike tougher then you might expect. It is recommended to do some shorter hikes in the area so you're used to the climate and terrain before attempting this one. The Moreau waterfall hike on this website is a good introduction to hiking in the jungle.
Expect a lot of people in the area around the waterfalls and almost no one on the stretch between the third and second chute du Carbet.
About the trail
You start at the Troisième chute du Carbet parking, at the end of Rte de Petit Marquisat. You will walk upriver, so the first half of the walk will be mostly uphill, while the second will be mostly downhill. The path will run somewhat parallel with the river all the way to the highest waterfall (1ère chute du Carbet). To check out every waterfall you take a short detour down to the river.
