Through the middle of Basse-Terre, the heavily forested side of Guadeloupe, lies the route de la traversée. This road crosses Basse-Terre from one way to another, straight through the jungle. Along the way you can take can stop to check out waterfalls and hikes. This hike in particular is worth checking out if you're looking for some adventure. As the title suggest you will cross a river 17 times along the way. On top of that, you'll enjoy pristine rain forest all around you while doing it. The variety in flora along the path is truly amazing.
The river crossings make this hike more challenging then what the altitude and distance might suggest. Start this hike well prepared with enough water and snacks.
Expect to have to go in the water hip-deep at some points. Therefore you might want to avoid this hike after heavy rain. You also might want to consider some ziplock bags to keep your phone and valuables dry.
About the trail
The track starts at Maison de la Forêt, roughly halfway the route de la traversée. This house of the forest acts like an info center and souvenir shop for tourists. A lot of tourists stop here to do "Le sentier de découvert", a short educational hike. You can always check this path out after this hike if you're still in the mood.
The hike start at the other side of the road, where a path leads down to the river. You will slowly make your way your west through the rainforest while doing the 17 river crossings. Afterwards, a climbing path leads you back up to the road.
For a very short time you will have to follow the road here. There a paved strip next to the road where you can walk on. Where this strip ends, look for a dirt path on your left that runs parallel with the main road through the forest. This is a nice and easy path to follow. After a while you will cross the road and will follow a path on the other side, leading you back to Maison de la Forêt.
